What is a White-Hat Hacker?

How are they different to other hackers?

Why would you trust them with your company's security?

What are White-Hat Hackers?

White-hat hackers are also known as ethical hackers. They use their skills to identify security vulnerabilities in hardware, software or networks and will find solutions to fix them. If you are in a business that takes payments or handles any kind of sensitive data you should consider hiring a white-hat hacker to make sure your systems are as secure as they can be. Don't assume your system is immune to cyberattacks, if you do when one happens the results could be devastating.

White Hackers will put your system through something called Penetration Testing. This will simulate a cyber attack on the company's system with the permission of the company. This will demonstrate how strong cybersecurity is and what flaws need fixing.

What's the difference between White-Hat Hackers and other Hackers?

There are three types of hackers, White, grey and black. But what's the difference?

White-Hat Hackers stick to the law. To make sure that you and your company stay safe they follow the proper disclosure laws set by the government.

Grey-Hat Hackers might not disclose everything. Even though they might mean well they will follow their own opinion on right and wrong instead of following what the law says.

Black-Hat Hackers are considered cybercriminals. These are the hackers that cause cyber attacks and steal data. This is the kind of hacker that white-hat hackers are trying to stop getting into your system.

What are the benefits of a Penetration Test?

So why should you hire an ethical hacker for your business?

  • You will get full diagnostics of the flaws in your system.
  • You will be prepared for a cyber attack
  • Minimises the chance of a cyber attack
  • Piece of mind
  • Keeping your customers safe

If you deal with payments or any kind of sensitive data you should be getting penetration tests done regularly as hackers are often creating new ways to get into your system.

How often should I get a Penetration Test?

You should get a penetration test once a year to keep your security up to date and to enable compliance with industry standards and regulations.
